What is Summer Reading?

The Summer Reading program provides fun, family-friendly entertainment for children and teens 0-17 years old, while providing the following benefits:

Slogan
  • Motivates children and teens to read.
  • Develops positive attitudes about reading and books.
  • Encourages regular use of the Library.
  • Attracts new users to the Library.
  • Offers experiences through which children and teens can learn to work cooperatively.

How It Works

1. Sign up and pick up your packet at the library. (All ages 0-17!)
2. Read or listen to books every day.
3. Read and report at least 800 minutes by August 26th to earn a paperback book.
4. Each finished reading log also enters you into grand prize drawings. 2 Winners (Kindle Fires).
5. Complete any of the Summer Reading Challenges for an extra ticket(s) in the prize drawing.

Concrete Youth Activity Day - Activity Day is a free event for youth and families to enjoy field games, live music & entertainment, hamburgers & hot dogs, ice cream and drinks, connect with resource providers, win prizes, and watch an outdoor family movie. Special Entertainment sponsored by USL at 2:30pm: KCPuppetree “Re-Build It Town! Puppet Show. Will be held at Silo Park.

Barbara Jean Hicks - Bring the family and join us for an author reading and book signing. Barbara Jean Hicks, local Ferndale author, returns to USL for a reading of her newest book, Once Upon a Parsnip. This self-proclaimed Story Queen will get kids excited about healthy eating during summer gardening season and all year round. Will be held at Upper Skagit Library.

Concrete Fly-In - The North Cascades Vintage Aircraft Museum and the Town of Concrete are working to make the 35th Fly-In the best ever. There will be live music, free children’s activities, pancake breakfast hosted by Grassmere Fire Dept, food trucks and most importantly vintage aircraft! Will be held at Concrete Air Field.

Isaac Petersen, Son of the Reptile Man - See and learn about exotic reptiles from around the world! Isaac will show a variety of reptiles and talk about their individual importance to the balance of nature. Certain animals are available for petting following the performance. All dangerous snakes have been surgically devenomized. Program paid for by the Friends of Skagit Libraries. Will be held on library lawn.

Library Board of Trustees

The Library Board of Trustees meets on the second Thursday of the month at 5pm in the library. The public is invited to attend.
